Research has proven that avoiding high glycemic food helps acne sufferers in the clearing of the skin. As high glycemic foods induce a sharp increase in blood glucose or sugar through low fiber and simple carbohydrates while low glycemic foods cause a gradual increase in glucose through high fiber and complex carbohydrates.
On following a diet of low glycemic load diet for 12 weeks, men suffering from acne experienced a reduction in pimples, whiteheads and other lesions when compared to men who stuck to a normal diet.

Those following a standard diet were told to include more of carbohydrates in their diet. Within 12 weeks, there was a considerable reduction in the 22 men following low glycemic diet, when compared to the 14 men in the control group.
Moreover, men in the low glycemic diet group lost weight, reduced levels in male sex hormones and suffered from severe insulin sensitivity. The results of the study were however preliminary, requiring more studies to confirm the dietary intervention on acne.
