Adult acne is a skin condition that affects mostly fair-skinned people of north-western European descent. It starts as erythema where there is flushing and redness on the center of the face, cheeks, nose, forehead and sometimes the neck and chest.
Research today has proven that adult acne is caused by a combination of two abnormal factors, and not one abnormal factor.
Adult acne is not only caused by a type of bacteria, but is also aggravated by the antibiotics that are used to treat its symptoms. And with the passing of time, adult acne tends to get worse.
Research has proven that it was the small proteins in the body’s host system, called anti-microbial peptides that induced acne type symptoms like bumps, pimples, redness and in increase in visible blood vessels.
So researchers looked for reasons for these patients to develop these abnormal peptides. It was found that the precursor form of these peptides, cathelicidin that guards the skin from infections was found in a different and excess form in patients suffering from rosacea.
In addition to this, rosacea patients also had high levels of enzymes in their bodies called stratum corneum tryptic enzymes that turned the precursor into disease causing peptides.
With this, it was inferred that too much of cathelicidin and SCTE leads to abnormal peptides that cause symptoms of rosacea. In the meantime, antibiotics alleviated the symptoms of rosacea in patients.
So this research proves that new approaches have to be sought to for creating a therapeutic treatment for rosacea.
