Research has proven that women are more prone to acne than men in age groups of 20 years or older. This research was done by surveying samples of men and women suffering from acne that continued after adolescence or adult onset acne.

Women and men above the age of 20 were made to complete one page questionnaires to find out the prevalence of acne in adults of different ages.

The questions in these questionnaires were targeted on getting to know if the person had ever suffered from acne or pimples in their teens or later life.

They were also asked if their acne became better, worse or remained the same while they were teenagers. Most of the participants had at one time or the other, tackle their problem of acne.

Most of the participants had experienced acne as teenagers, while for all age groups following teenage group, acne was more prevalent in women than men. All the age groups of 30s, 40s and 50s showed that more women suffered more from acne problems than men.

This research also assessed different aspects of acne in women where the women were asked to note the changes in acne during their menstrual period, pre-menopausal and post-menopausal status and the effect of treatments for symptoms of menopause on acne.

Most of these women noticed that their acne got worse during menstruation. Through research, it was found that hormones played a key role in acne being more prevalent in women. And it was this point that proved to be beneficial in creating future treatments for acne.
