Normally acne is commonly associated with teens and adults. But are you aware that even babies can be afflicted with acne? Surprising as it may seem, even babies are prone to acne.
Acne in babies (acne neonatorum) is a common problem afflicting around 20% newborns. Infants suffer from neonatal acne due to spurring of the baby’s sebaceous glands by remaining maternal hormones after birth. These hormones penetrate through the placenta and enter into your baby. After delivery they are responsible for the oil glands on the skin to form bumps, resembling pimples. This can give rise to red pimples on the cheeks, forehead and chin as well as whiteheads on the baby’s skin.
Common baby acne pattern is:
• Usually occurs at 3 weeks old, though it can be present at the time of birth
• Boys are more prone to the problem than girls
• Papules (little solid rounded red bumps) and pustules (whiteheads) are the most common
Most babies get acne on and near face, including the cheeks and at times on the scalp. Most lesions automatically vanish by the time the babies are 4 months old. So there is no need for any acne treatment. Cleanse the baby’s face at least once daily by using water and mild baby soap. Don’t use oils or lotions, as they can worsen the problem.
In case of severe acne, your doctor might prescribe a treatment of benzoyl peroxide, topical creams such as retinoids or other keratolytic agents.
