Myth 1: Acne is caused by your diet – scientific studies found no connection between food and acne. This is one of the most popular myths especially with regards to food such as chocolate, French fries, and pizza. While this remains a myth, it is important not to discard it though because it may be proven to be true in the future.

Myth 2: Acne is a result of stress – the stress of everyday living is not a factor in acne. However, severe stress that needs to be treated by medications can cause acne as its side effect. If you notice that you have acne because of drug prescriptions, consult your doctor.

Myth 3: Acne can be caused by poor hygiene – this myth causes some people to wash hard and frequently; this techniques can actually make your condition worse. Acne is not actually caused by surface oil or even dirt; so gently wash your face twice daily with mild soap and pat it dry instead; you can use appropriate treatments to get rid of the acne.

Myth 4: Acne is a disease – acne can affect a person’s look and can result to permanent scars that can affect a person emotionally but physically speaking, acne is not a serious threat to your health.

It is a known fact that people of Latino, African and Indian decent all have pigmentation that is darker than those of European decent. The treatment of skin diseases is usually based on the color of the skin and so their treatment differs from treatment vented to those with fair skin.

There are some cosmetic procedures that cannot be used on those with dark skin as there is a possibility of it leaving light spots on the skin. When you speak of acne, however, the treatment does not depend on the color of the skin.

On the contrary, treatment of acne is based on the type of acne you are suffering from and which treatment option is best for treating the acne you suffer from. Some forms of acne medication may make your skin sensitive to sun exposure and is not dependant on the color of the skin. The sensitivity the skin develops is basically a side effect of the acne medication.

Though those having dark skin are not prone to sunburn when compared to those with light complexions, it is possible that acne medication will make those with dark skin as prone to sun damage as those suffering from light skin.

If you have to spend lots of time in the sun, it is better to use a sun blocking product having an SPF factor of at least 15. There is however, one acne condition that afflicts only those with African heritage.

This form of acne is called Pomade acne that is caused by a hair care product used for straightening very curly hair. It has a heavy oil base which has to be kept off the skin and handled carefully.

Once this inflammation clears up, it is possible that the pigmentation of very dark skin gets increased. This condition is called ‘post inflammatory hyper pigmentation. However the spots return to normal color after some time. If required, the process can be hastened with medication a dermatologist prescribes.

There are many acne myths that have been passed down from generation to generation regarding information on the causes and treatment of acne. One conception is that acne is limited to those with ‘dirty’ skin and affects mainly teens eating junk food.

However this perception of dirty skin causing acne can be harmful to some acne sufferers who try too hard to clean their skin, only to cause more damage and in the process, increase the number of acne breakouts.

This is because if the skin is cleansed more than 2 or 3 times a day, in 24 hours, then your skin dries out. This is turn leads to an increased secretion of oil which in turn leads to an acne attack. This may lead to a cyclic attack of acne that worsens the health of your skin.

Another myth that the diet teenagers follow leads to acne is also false as there is no scientific proof to prove this idea. It is your overall body health that helps fight infections, including acne which is infections of hair follicles.

However some foods like chocolate, fried foods and sugar that don’t actually cause acne breakouts. Too much of this food is not advisable not only for teenagers, but for people of all ages.

Following a healthy eating style is the most important point to remember for healthy skin. This is because a healthy diet helps the body handle all forms of stress and germs without needing any help from medical professionals.

Sun exposure for treating acne is another acne myth. This is because though minimal exposure to sunlight does even out the skin tone, it damages the skin that is not affected by acne. As a result, you find that the body produces healing agents for the damaged skin and in the process, creates an increasing number of blemishes.

Moreover, if you are treating acne with benzoyl peroxide, the skin tends to become sensitive to sunlight. There is an increased risk of burns associated with this product, so make it a point to wear sun block when you go into the sun.

There are numerous myths that have been associated with acne. These myths have been passed down from generation to generation where people have been following these myths blindly.

However it is not always that these myths have an essence of truth in them. Acne is said to be caused by eating some foods. However this is a myth that has no scientific backing to prove this.

However it is suggested that following a balanced diet may in many ways, help in improving the texture of the skin. So taking this point in mind, it may have been reasoned that some foods were not really advantageous for acne.

Washing the face is considered to be a good habit to control acne. However this myths stands to be true only if the face is gently washed about twice a day. Washing the face vigorously will in no way clear acne.

In fact, on the contrary, too much of washing may lead to further irritation and thus, a worsening of the acne attack. It has been found that exposure to sunlight or ultra light has no effect to improving acne.

In fact, too much of UV light on the skin only leads to an increase in skin cancer, and also a possible early aging of the skin. This implies that it is not advisable to spend too long periods of time under direct sunlight.

One myth that stands true till today is the myth regarding squeezing of acne lesions. It is not recommended to squeeze acne lesions as wit the squeezing of the lesions, infected material is forced deeper into the skin.

This in turn only leads to an increase in inflammation and in many times, possible scarring. Instead of squeezing the pimples, apply some cream on it so that the pimple either dries up or recedes. This will help control and curb an acne attack.

Feline acne is not actually a form of acne. Instead, it is a rare skin condition which affects a few people. It involves a bacterial infection and has similar characteristics like skin mites, yeast infection, ringworm and auto-immune diseases.

The main cause of feline acne is bacterial infection. Another common cause of feline acne is the use of plastic food bowls. This is because the porous plastic here can lead to bacteria getting lodged in its crevices.

The best treatment required for feline acne is to wash the area everyday using a dilute antiseptic soap. Suggestions are those soaps with chlorhexidine like Hibiclens or Nolvasan or washing with iodine like Betadine till things clear up.

However do not use any form of antibacterial hand soap as it leaves too much of residue on your body. Moreover, detergent dish soap is too strong, and will only lead to damage of the skin.

The doctor may prescribe some additional treatment for feline acne, depending on the severity of the infection. However if you are suffering from a mild infection where there are only a few blackheads or specks of dark skin discharge, it may go off automatically.

Myths are just what they are; myths. There seldom is a fraction of truth in them as these are beliefs that were started ages ago because of false beliefs and illogical logic. One of the more popular acne myths doing its rounds now are that the sun actually helps gets rid of acne.

The actually reality to this myth is that though the sun may seem to help in clearing existing acne on your skin, what really happens is that your skin gets reddened in the sun. This reddening of the skin leads to a blend of the skin tone with the red acne marks.

On the contrary, too much of sun exposure may damage the skin and cause irritation that aggravates the acne condition. In fact, the skin tends to break out when healing from sun damage.

It can be said that the sun is a short term band aid that works temporarily in reducing acne and only leads to more acne in following weeks of exposure to the sun. This does not imply that it the sun is not good for the skin.

The sun provides your daily requirements for vitamin D; and it is impossible to avoid sunlight all the time. So instead, just limit your exposure of the sun to acne prone areas. Another common myth making its rounds is that diet and acne are related.

This is something that cannot be ridiculed completely. It is only with research that you will be able to decide if this myth is a reality. It is impossible to believe, but some people from some societies don’t suffer from acne while some societies just have all its members suffering from acne.

This makes you wonder if the diet of a person contributes to acne-free skin. It is basically through trial and error where you arrive at some consensus for the best diet for you, where acne attacks are reduced considerably.

One of the most common acne myths is the fact that regular washing of the face can lead to reduction of acne. However on the contrary, frequent washing tends to irritate pores and thus clog them. Even using a washcloth creates more irritation than help.

This is because dirt does not cause facial blemishes and neither does pores get blocked with impurities. It is usually the walls of the pore that join in the skin to form acne. So the best you should do is to wash your face gently with bare hands, twice a day.

Another famous acne myth is that stress causes acne. Of course, stress has its effects on hormones which can promote acne. However any form of acne treatment that you use or follow is anytime more powerful than a bout of stress.

There are some psychiatric medications that list acne as one of its side effects. However on its own, stress is not a great factor in inducing acne.

It is better to look for an effective form of acne treatment instead of getting stressed out thinking that stress initiated your acne attack.

It is often thought that too much of masturbation or sex induces acne. However in reality, this is an antiquated notion that has its origins as early as 17th century.

This myth was started to dissuade youngsters from getting involved in premarital sex. Other than this, there is no connection between sex, masturbation and acne.

So it can be seen that acne myths are usually acne myths that seldom have much reality in them. They are meant to be left as it is while you follow an effective acne clearing regime.

Quite a few people suffer from Milia, which is a form of acne that occurs in white bumps. It occurs when normally sloughed skin cells get trapped in the surface of the skin.

They occur the most in newborns across the names and upper cheeks and sometimes on adult skin.

With the wearing away of the skin and the sloughing of the dead skin, these bumps disappear. This is usually in the first few weeks of life; however in the case of adults, Milia may persist for some time.

Though no treatment is suggested or indicated for children, it is possible for adults to have them removed with the help of a physician, mainly for cosmetic improvements in the skin.

The basic symptoms of Milia include whitish and pearly bumps in the newborn skin. It is more prevalent in cheeks, the nose and chin.

Sometimes there may also be whitish and pearly bumps that occur on the gums of roof of the mouth. this form of Milia is referred to as Epstein’s pearls which tend to go away on their own.

Adults suffer from Milia on the face. Sometimes bumps and cysts also occur on inflamed or injured parts of the body like in the irritation of skin by rough sheets or clothing.

There are no specific methods for diagnosing Milia as the doctor can diagnose it just by examining the skin. There is absolutely no need of any testing to indicate a Milia attack.

Sometimes irritate Milia is referred to as ‘baby acne’ when it may not actually be a form of acne.

I had acne for a long time. In fact due to acne I’ve not been able to have good friends or even a decent social life. And I’m sorry to say that I was desperate; anything for an acne cure. The acne scars still persist in my face still cause tremendous embarrassment to me. So what did I try to cure my acne and scars? Almost everything. Take a look.

  • One doctor prescribed a complete vegetarian diet without onion and ginger or even garlic. He even banished rice, bread, and potatoes from my daily diet. Imagine the misery! Oh did I forget to mention the weekly enemas and herbal baths under the moonlight. I was able to stick with the food plan for only a month and then I succumbed. It didn’t really affect the acne but definitely made me svelte.
  • Another quack said I had emotional and mental stress which was causing my inner child to break out in acne. It sounds pretty silly now but at that time I was desperate. The quack prescribed a whole basketful of tranquilizers which kept me pretty doped for a week till realized what was going on and chucked his pills forever.

I do have a few more experiences to relate but I guess that’s enough for today. Check this space for more aggrieved venting on acne quacks.

Acne is an annoying disease which can strike at any time and any age. So it’s not unusual to see many people try to find any type of acne control tips to get rid of their problem.

Here are a few unusual acne control tips I’ve come across on the internet.

No guarantees on effect, so try them out at your own risk!

Washing your face with your own urine or baby urine. OK, this ranks high on my yuck factor. My or any ones else’s urine is strictly for the potty and not to be used on the face. The very idea of using emissions of one end on the skin of another end of my body gives me the shivers!

A pearl powder and egg white mask. Powder the pearl and mix with the egg white to form an iridescent mask to control acne. I might be a country bumpkin doctor but I still value pearls and I’d prefer to wear them as a pendant, rather then powder a perfectly good pearl to put on my face. The pearl pendant is much more guaranteed to get admiring glances.

• The 3-minute face-wash procedure. I don’t have time to eat and take care of an active two-year-old toddler. So how on earth am I going to get him to sit still so that I can rinse my face for three minutes? The whole world could be destroyed by the sitting dynamo which is my son.

Watch this space for more funny and useless acne remedies.

Although any one who has suffered from the common acne or Acne vulgaris knows how it looks like, here are a few unusual type of acne which may occur in some patients causing severe distress,

·        Acne Mechanica- is a type of acne which affects gym regulars. A type of acne which occurs under athletic gear or tight-fitting wear. This type of acne is common under tight fitting non-breathable synthetic gym clothes. Change your gym attire by using cotton or suitable moisture–wicking clothes to protect your skin. And please try not to share towels. If possible get disposable wash cloths to wipe your face.

·        Backne or back acne- can start in many forms of blackheads, pustules, papules, or pimples and even cause big cysts.

·        Acne Cosmetica- is a typical reaction seen in response to cosmetic use like compacts. Women with oily skin are more likely to use a compact to absorb the extra oil resulting in a faster clogging of the pores. This will result in a flare up of the acne called as Acne Cosmetica.  This type of acne is commonly seen on the forehead and cheeks.

·        Pomade Acne- some teenagers are prone to using hair gels, pomades, or mousses in their hair to give it a wet slicked–back look. Pomade is usually used once a hairstyle necessitates that curly hair be smoothed down or styled into various shapes. This type of acne can be found on the cheeks and foreheads and under the hair line in response to the gel, which are pore-clogging in nature.

These are just a few varieties of unusual acne I’ve found. I’ve even heard of psychological acne which comes under conditions of severe stress and if pinched leaves typical scars; although I’ve not found any research to back up the myth.

This article will continue to find more unusual types of acne in a few days. Keep in touch.

The human body undergoes many changes in its hormonal levels over the passage of time. With these hormonal changes, the body too undergoes lots of changes. One such hormone that brings about major change in the human body is androgen.

These hormones are responsible for stimulating the sebaceous glands and hair follicles that are found in the skin. And it is these changes that usually cause hormonal acne in a person.

In women, it is usually around menstruation time that these sebaceous glands get stimulated to produce flare ups. Research has proven that the human oil duct openings generally remain small during the 15th to 20th days of the 28 day cycle.

It is only during the 21st to 26th days that its size increases and then decreases on the 2 days prior to menstruation. So following this cycle, you find that premenstrual acne or cyclical acne is usually the worst on the 22nd day of the menstrual month.

When suffering from cyclical acne, you don’t always have to go to a doctor or get a prescription to treat it. Changes in your diet and some supplements are quite effective in bringing miracles to your premenstrual acne attack.

Washing your face does not prove effective in controlling cyclical acne as if this was all that was required, you could control your acne just by washing your face more frequently. Of course, wash your face as a habit but not as a means of curing your premenstrual breakouts.

Everyone knows acne is caused by a bacterial infection and in fact it is not contagious. But is this information actually true? There are many myths floating about regarding acne, and its causes. And there are quite a few common myths which are held to be absolutely true.

So let’s demolish a few common myths about acne and get to ground realities,

1.      Any one can get acne. Acne is not restricted to people with oily skin. But people with oily skin are more susceptible to bacterial infections of the skin as the oil tends to collect on the surface and clogs the pores of the skin.

2.      Eating a lot of chocolate can cause acne. This is absolutely not true! I happen to love chocolate but I don’t have a single zit. Research has proved that chocolate has nothing to do with acne.

3.      Washing your face many times a day can ward of pimples. Not true and this may dry out the skin, causing a flare up of oil production in order to keep skin soft and supple.

4.      Applying toothpaste and saliva to acne will dry it up. This is absolutely not true and infact pretty dangerous to the skin. But saliva is not as dangerous as toothpaste. Applying toothpaste to the skin can result in spot burns due to caustic nature of toothpaste. Please remember that toothpaste contains specific ingredients designed to clean teeth and have a lasting effect to sweeten your breath. Applying toothpaste to zits is as silly as applying hemorrhoid cream to your eyelids.

Acne can be really difficult to control and sometimes people will blame anything to get rid of it. Chocolates, sex, diet, cleanliness and heredity; at different times almost all of these have picked up equal blame for causing acne. So how true are they? Let’s find out?

  • Diet- acne is not caused by your diet. A lot of scientific studies were conducted and none of them can prove that diet ingredients cause acne. So don’t blame the chocolate, pizza, French fries, and cokes. Although with these you could get really chubby. On the other hand, a study done lately definitely demonstrates a link between milk consumption particularly skim milk and the formation of acne. Another study has also suggested a link between the use of high-glycemic foods and acne.
  • Deficient personal hygiene. Acne is not affected by dirt. This is a common false impression. As acne is an infection of the outer covering of the body, on the surface, many people think that personal hygiene causes acne. The truth is that acne is and infection located deep within the layers of the skin and persona hygiene can’t really affect it. But it’s a good idea to be clean if you want any friends.
  • It is supposed that masturbation or celibacy might produce acne. Not true, Not true, Not true, Not true!
  • Acne is caused by stress. Ordinary everyday stress can’t really cause. If that was the case imagine how President George Bush’s face would look like. Severe stress needing medical attention may be capable of acne as a side effect.
  • You just have to let acne run its course. Why in the world would you need those pimply spots on your face? Some acne can cause scars. Many people can’t resist pressing the pimples. This can cause the acne to spread and cause ugly scars which can be damaging to the skin.

There’s no real for worry with the proper care you can control your acne and get clear glowy skin.

Let’s be frank! Acne is the most annoying disease on the planet, it crops up at the most inopportune times, causes tremendous breakouts and the sometimes simply disappears on it own.

Like I said, simply hair-wrenchingly annoying!

But for all that, there are few common acne myths floating around which are taken as the absolute truth, but do they really have any scientific basis? I didn’t really know but I thought I’d find out. So, here’s what my research says about the common myths of acne

  1. Chocolate causes acne- Yeah, right. This is probably every dentist’s nightmare. Imagine what would happen if ever child and teen simply stopped eating chocolate to avoid acne. Instant bankruptcy for the dentist and his clan! But I digress! Suffice to say that there’s no relation between chocolate and acne.
  1. Acne is contagious- No, you can’t catch acne from someone! And no matter how desperately you want to give that really bitchy friend of yours few zits, you really can’t, it’s not possible!
  1. Stress can increase acne- Well I don’t care what the research says on this, because it’s definitely true in my case. Stress causes my acne to flare up due to the secretion of a hormone called as Cortisol. Cortisol can increase production of sebum causing a flare up of your acne during high-tension times like examinations and job interviews.
  1. Sex causes acne- He he, He he (dirty grin) not true is it?
  1. Acne is only surface deep-Acne is skin disease, but anyone who has had a really bad case of acne knows how people can react to it. First impressions are based on looks and a bad case of acne can damage that first impression. People can make really nasty comments and it can be really hurtful. But you have to remember that it’s a treatable condition.

So get off your butt and do something!

It was always taught that too much of exercise only aggravates acne because of the sweat. By exercising and taking part in strenuous activities, your skin condition is aggravated, and this was thought to spark an acne attack.

However this myth was proven wrong by a study conducted by the Stanford University School of Medicine some time back.

With their research, the researchers proved that the changes in acne did not seem to correlate with the exercise days; the time the people spent exercising, the time the people sweated during exercise or the time gap between exercise and showering.

Researchers thus proved that it is okay for people suffering from acne problems to exercise, so long as they showered within the hour. The myth of exercising causing acne was triggered by a study involving football players.

As these football players suffered from acne attacks, it was thought that it was the football they played that triggered acne.

However in reality, it was the areas where the helmet and uniform padding rubbed the body of the athletes that acne attacks started.

This type of acne they suffered from is called ‘acne mechanica’, which is acne that is started after exhausting activity.

This thus proved that it was not the football game that triggered acne, but the friction that developed between the football players’ skin and their equipment that brought about the acne attack.

So with this cleared, as long as you wear comfortable clothing while exercising, there is no worry of acne getting triggered with exercise.

Though Benzoyl Peroxide is a very popular and effective acne medication, it is more than likely that many users may experience side effects like itching and drying.

Such people should consider using the alternative herbal medicine, green tea. Green tea is not only as effective as benzoyl peroxide; it is a safe and healthy form of acne treatment too.

Chinese people have been using green tea to improve the condition of their health since the past few centuries. Though green tea has been used for so long, no one was actually aware of it being useful in preventing and treating acne.

It was a research study conducted by Jennifer Gan-Wong that proved this healing power of green tea. This research study comprised of comparison of the effects of green tea cream against 4% benzoyl peroxide solution on volunteers suffering from moderate to severe acne.

With this study, volunteers using both creams were cured from acne. However there are some added advantages to using green tea to cure acne. One advantage is that it has natural anti-bacterial properties and antioxidants like epigallocatechin gallate.

This is a substance that is considered to be more than 200 times more powerful than vitamin E in its fight against free radicals. It is possible to take green tea extract orally as a sugarless tea or be applied topically in the form of green tea creams.

You not only get smooth and skin that is free of blemishes with green tea, you find that it is helpful in the reduction of inflammation, the improvement of hormonal activity in the body and in detoxification of the body and skin. All these properties prove to be beneficial to those suffering from acne.

Eating too much of highly processed foods is said to trigger acne; and it is one of the reasons that it is said that eating too much of bread can lead to acne attacks.

It is a fact that the refined grain and sugar found in bread increases the level of insulin in the body. And past research has found that too much of insulin in the body tends to stimulate acne.

It is mainly because of the fact that white bread is easy to digest that it leads to higher insulin, and the insulin like growth factor called IGF-1. With this, you find an increased amount of male hormones in the body that causes an increase of sebum and oil in the skin.

Those on a low carbohydrate diet tend to have less acne flare-ups. So scientists infer that acne breakouts in both adults and teenagers are caused by the over consumption of unhealthy foods.

For additional proof to this statement, it has been found that acne flare-ups are uncommon in countries where most of the food is largely unprocessed.

In fact, in the Kitava Islanders of Papua New Guinea and the Ache of the Amazon, acne is practically unknown! The people here eat only minimally processed foods.

So this infers that if you want to control your acne problem, make it a point to reduce your consumption of highly refined foods like noodles, bread, sweets and processed foods. Watch your diet, and soon your acne will be under your control.
