IPL for Acne and Acne Scars

Intense Pulse Light, commonly refereed to as IPL, is a form of treatment that can be used for acne scar removal. This is the first type of treatment that makes use of light to reduce acne and acne scars. The light is passed through the affected areas and it works best because it kills acne-causing bacteria as well. IPL is also used to dry out the overly active oil glands on the face and other parts of the body. Probably the best thing about IPL though is that people will not feel pain when going through the IPL therapy. However, patients need to expect redness is certain parts of the affected areas after the treatment.
IPL is quick to remove acne from the surface of the skin because it has three functions:

Punch excision/punch grafting – this method is use to treat depressed scars. A small tool that looks like a cookie cutter will cut the scar from your skin. When the scar is excised, your skin will be sutured close. Generally, there will be a small scar at the end of the treatment but it would be less visible than the original one. With time, the new scar will fade although it can be helped along by microdermabrasion.
Subcutaneous Incision – also referred to as subcision. This type of acne scar removal is the treatment for rolling acne scars and depressed scars. It is a surgical procedure wherein a small needle is inserted to be parallel to the surface of skin. The needle will then cut the tissue that tether into deeper structure. Because of this, the skin will lift when the band of tissue has been released.
Dermabration – this procedure must be performed under local anesthesia. A rotating wire brush will go through the top layer of your skin. When your skin heals, the acne scars will have softened and deep scars are reduced in depth.
FDA Approved Acne Scar Removal

In the past, acne scars were extremely difficult to remove. It takes months before the skin can naturally heal itself from these blemishes. It was only in recent years that highly effective procedures have been developed with varying degrees of success. Before we look over some of the FDA approved treatments though, you should always remember to be realistic with your expectations. Understanding that acne scars cannot be completely removed in an instant will go a long way in improving your satisfaction level with these treatments.
Laser Treatments
There are two basic types of laser treatments including ablative and non-ablative.
The ablative laser will resurface the skin by getting rid of the outer layers. Some of the most common types of ablative laser include the carbon dioxide treatment and eribium. It will produce a smoother skin because atrophic scars will be reduced. Scarring is also softened so the acne scar can be removed in a shorter amount of time.
Meanwhile, non-ablative treatments can cause changes in the dermis even without damaging the skin surface. Non-ablative laser will stimulate new collagen growth and tighten the skin. This type of treatment is usually recommended for deep scars, not for mild acne scar.
Using Injectable Skin Implant Artecoll for Removal of Acne Scars

Depressed skin like scars and acne scars, and wrinkles are now corrected using a new injectable and durable skin implant called Artecoll. This is an injection that is a combination of collagen, polymethylmethacrylate and anesthetic lidocaine.
The microspheres used here are 32-40 micrometers large and are too large to be removed by macrophages of the body which usually remove foreign substances from the body. This is a substance that looks inert in skin and has been used in dental prostheses, pacemakers, bone repair and eye lenses for quite some time.
Artecoll is injected into the skin wherein connective tissue is formed as collagen around the injected substance. This leads to an increase in volume of skin which in turn corrects the acne scar. The new tissue gets completely formed in three months.
You may experience some mild swelling at the start, which settles in a few weeks’ time. There may be some redness at the acne site for a few days while pain and mild itching is rather uncommon here.
Symptoms disappear in a few days’ time and lumps or granulomas forming around the injected material are very rare. Instead of injecting too much of Artecoll at once, it is better to use numerous small collagen injections to work at getting rid of acne scars.
Before using Artecoll, it is better to have a skin test done on the inside of your arm, using a small amount of Artecoll. This is to make sure there is no allergic reaction to collagen or lidocaine. If there is any allergy or reactions, refrain from using Artecoll for removing acne scars.
Do not use Artecoll if you have allergy to lidocaine, cow products or collagen. And those with thin, loose skin or thick scars should not use this product. Even those with immunologic diseases should not use Artecoll to get rid of acne scars.
How An Acne Scar Is Formed

Scarring is something that is inevitable and present in all healing processes. It occurs due to an imbalance in the collagen production at the site of the wound. With the maturing of the scar, there are numerous changes to it.
However unfortunately, there is nothing much that can be done to make scars disappear completely as they are permanent in nature. Products like Bio-oil improve the appearance of scars, but do not remove them completely.
Scars develop through 4 phases. The first is the haemostatic phase that starts immediately, and lasts for a few hours while the wounded area gets restored to its normal state with the constriction of blood vessels.
This controls bleeding wherein injured cells release thromboplastin to activate clotting and let the healing process start.
The inflammatory phase is the second phase that lasts for 3-4 days with redness and swelling proving immune response. This is when white blood cells cleanse the wound of bacteria and debris.
In the proliferative phase which starts on the 3rd day to continue to 3 weeks, you find three different processes occurring simultaneously to close and bind the wound. Here granulization where fibroblasts (cells) create collagen to fill the wound.
You also find epithelialization taking place here where a layer of skin covers the wound and in wound contraction, the wound is pulled together to minimize the defect of the wound.
The last stage is the maturation phase that starts around the 21st day and continues for about 2 years. Depending on the stress the scar has undergone, collagen fibers are re-arranged to determine the final nature of the scar.
Using Bio-oil To Get Rid Of Acne Scars:

Getting rid of acne scars after an acne attack is one of the most difficult things to do. Some people end up with light and superficial scars while others end up with deep scars. To help you eliminate acne scars, there are many products found on the market like Bio-oil.
