About 20% of newborn babies suffer from newborn acne, or acne neonatorum. This is a skin disease that affects newborn babies and infant on their cheeks, chin, face and forehead. Some babies are also affected by whiteheads.
Babies get acne neonatorum by its mother passing hormones to newborn babies. Oil glands are then developed in the skin of the baby or infant by these hormones. It is usually male babies that suffer more from acne neonatorum than female babies.
This acne may occur on the baby’s skin in a month from the baby’s birth. This acne is usually found as papules and pustules and can be resolved in the infant without treatment as this acne is usually formed by fussy, hot or irritation of the skin.
So when the baby contacts dirty clothes or when its clothes become wet with saliva and milk, they may suffer from acne neonatorum. In such conditions, the baby’s face has to be washed with mild soap and Luke warm water regularly.
It is not advised to use lotions and oils on the affected area of the baby’s skin as this only increases acne and makes it worse. Scrubbing the baby’s face may irritate the skin; so don’t scrub the baby’s face.
Acne neonatorum usually disappears in 2-4 weeks’ time and is not a serious skin problem for babies and infants. This baby acne continues till between the age of 4-6 months; however if this acne continues till after the 6th month, the pediatrician has to be visited immediately.
If the baby suffers from severe cases of newborn acne, it is possible to use topical creams like retinoid or keratolytic agents or benzoyl peroxide to treat it. Parents should wash their baby’s clothes in detergents that does not have any chemical or harsh ingredient.
There are some natural products, soothing lotions and Aveeno baby washes that are meant specifically for newborn babies and infants for the treatment of its acne. Even vinegar can be used to treat any form of newborn acne.
