The fact of there being a connection between acne and food is a myth that has been around for some time as acne is usually blamed with genes and overactive glands.
However a study was conducted to find out if there was really a connection between acne and food and it was found out that a low carbohydrate diet helped reverse diet, and give clearer skin.
This study was done on 1,300 Kitivan Islanders of Papua New Guinea and Ache hunter gatherers of Paraguay, where no one suffered from acne. The fact that both groups of people had perfect skin could not stem from genetics, but be identified with their diet of wild game, fish, fruit, nut, wild game and sweet potatoes.
This diet is very much unlike the high calorie diet followed by those in Western societies of sugar and grains, who end up suffering from acne. These high carbohydrate foods are easily digested, but leads to chain reactions that elevates the blood sugar and insulin levels.
This in turn leads to an excess of male hormones, which makes skin pores secrete sebum, which attracts acne promoting bacteria. So researchers say that switching to a natural, low carbohydrate diet will indeed lead to a clearer skin.
In addition to a low calorie diet, it is beneficial to eat food having zinc, vitamin A, essential fatty acids and vitamin B6 for clear skin. In addition to all this, it has been found out that stress and food allergies also contribute to acne.
So it is better to keep a control on stress and any food allergies you may be suffering from to have a control on your acne attacks.
