Body Conditioning exercises from Uechi Ryu Karate
Why is body conditioning so crucial? Because without it you will be so shocked at actually being hit in a fight that all of your training will be delayed leaving you completely defenseless. In order to be a fighter or a martial artist, you must get used to being hit. There is no alternative, and those that promise you great results without actually training you through body conditioning are only giving you empty promises which will evaporate in the face of a powerful strike.
How do you develop your martial art body conditioning? Its a primal methodology which is based upon the bodies restructuring of bone and tissue in relation to its perceived stress. If you continually strike a portion of you body, the tissue and bone will begin to become denser and stronger while simultaneously reducing the number of active pain receptors.
The main structures for martial art conditioning are the knuckles, forearms, stomach, thighs, shins, top of the foot, and even toes. You can either condition with a partner or use an object by yourself. A popular object to use for martial art body conditioning is a bowling pin.
Repetitive martial striking will gradually build what is called body armor. Over time, even faster then you might think, you will be pleasantly surprised when you trade strikes someone without training as you won’t even notice the pain while they are wincing and shying away.

You are 100% correct, body conditioning is so crucial to training. Good blog!

Yep :) This kind of body conditioning is one of many tools that may be used in fight training, but let us remember that it is better to not get hit. Body conditioning is a kind of “in case I DO get hit” kind of thing.

The thing about fighting is that you WILL get get. Even if you win the fight you may still have a black eye, fat lip, fractured bone, stab wound, etc. This is the reality of fighting. If you think you can fight and not get hit than you need to quit your dojo and go somewhere else.

The best body conditioning is sparing. Spend some quality time in the ring and you will quickly not only condition your body to taking blows but lose the fear of being hit.

If you aren’t sparing than you aren’t trainig!

Well, a misunderstanding of terminology or something, I suppose ;^_^. Of course, sparring is one of the ultimate training methods for self defense - helps put the mental AND physical training into perspective, besides the obvious fighting practice. So, it’d be pretty hard to argue against sparring. And while it’s obvious that in a fight, one will get hit, the goal is to try NOT to get hit at all - martial arts being self defense and such. Again, of course, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared to get hit - and in my original comment I agree that body conditioning could be used in training - and I do believe it should, just in case. Perhaps I wasn’t clear enough at first heh ;^_^.

But, to be completely fair, we do all have our own ways to train - and as long as we all serve the greater good, instead of pushing our own agendas or styles as the best, all the better!

plus, when you get used to it, it feels like a uechi massage. karate with conditioning is basically for people who enjoy the contact of the hit
