At the start, muay Thai was rather dangerous where there was no safety gear for the fighters to wear. all they had were lengths of cords that were wrapped around the fists as gloves.
However time brought with it rules that were written following international boxing regulations. In fact, recently, the sport has attracted so much of popularity outside Thailand that training arrangements have been set up in distant countries like US and former Soviet states.
The World Muay Thai Council was started in 1995 following a cabinet resolution to promote this game to national and international levels. after soccer, muay Thai is the most passionately followed sport of Thailand.
Its fights are broadcast five days a week while fight results in major stadiums are reported in major newspapers. Even international boxing is popular here with the country producing dozens of world champions having roots as muay Thai fighters.
