Researchers from many parts of the world have found out that stress does indeed worsen acne. It is a known fact that more than 80% of the teens, and more than 25% of adults tend to suffer from acne.
A study was conducted to prove the claim that stress is indeed one of the causes of acne, which was till now a fact that was left unsubstantiated. Altogether 22 university students participated in this study.
Each of these 22 participants had to answer a minimum of one academic examination in the span of the study. The reason exam sessions were used for the study is because an exam session is a common source of stress for most students.
The Perceived Stress Scale helped record stress levels by measuring perceptions of life stress. This included how often they found these participants finding things in their life turning out to be uncontrollable, overwhelming and unpredictable.
On the completion of this study, it was found that the participants who had undergone maximum stress during examinations were those who had the greatest exacerbation in the severity of acne attacks.
Another factor that seemed to contribute to an increase in acne severity was the worsening of the diet. With this relationship of stress increasing the occurrence of acne in a person, it was thus inferred that some other behavioral interventions could be used for treating patients, besides using medications.
With psychological stress known for slowing wound healing by up to 40%, it gives added proof that there is some connection between stress and the worsening of acne. However as all these participants only suffered from mild acne attacks, further studies have to be conducted to confirm the role of stress playing causing acne in most cases.
