Acne is something we all know about and tend to suffer from in puberty and adolescence. However sometimes what seems to be an acne bout, may be something more than that. Those suffering from enlarged pores may think they are suffering from acne.

It is quite normal for a person to have enlarged skin pores during adolescence with the increase in sebum production. However with aging, the pores enlarge more with a loss in skin elasticity. These larger pores may have what looks like small grayish blackheads found on the nose and cheeks.

However these are not actually blackheads but sebum lining the pore. As sebum is meant to be there, there is no point in squeezing as sebum tends to return the next day. Moreover, frequent handling of the pores only damages it, and makes it enlarge permanently.

Epidermal cysts are usually mistaken for cystic acne. However unlike cystic acne that occurs in the confines of an infected follicle, epidermal cysts are found as sac like growths found in the deeper layers of the skin. These cyst sacs are filled with whitish, soft material that remains indefinitely. Though these small cysts don’t need treatment, they get to be rather irritating.

However the larger cysts may get infected, which proves to be painful and leads to scars. They are usually permanent, for the removal of the material only leads to the sac remaining as it is and the cyst to return. Though cysts are usually benign, it is always better to consult the doctor if you have any suspicious lumps or bumps.
