Of the many forms of acne prevailing today, acne cosmetica is a mild, but persistent form. This is a form of acne that is triggered by cosmetics and can occur anywhere on the body. However it is more prevalent in the face, hairline, neck and scalp.
Acne cosmetica occurs in the form of small bumps across the surface of the scalp or skin. This makes the skin look and feel rough. Sometimes, there may be some papules, pustules and comedones present on the skin. However there seldom is any inflammation.
The main causes of acne cosmetica are the use of hair or skin care products which are comedogenic in nature. Basically, on the accumulation of a cosmetic product in the follicle, the pore gets blocked.
This leads to the build up of excess skin oil, clogging of the pore and with all this, the start of a blemish. It can be said that the common causes of acne cosmetica are pomades or hair oils, eye creams, makeup and heavy moisturizers.
The best way to avoid acne cosmetica attacks is to either avoid cosmetics altogether; and if this is not possible, to use cosmetic products that are labeled non-comedogenic in nature.
If and when you wear cosmetics, make it a point to always wash your face and remove all cosmetics before sleeping. Cosmetics that are not cleaned properly can accumulate on the skin to trigger an attack of acne cosmetica.
