Acne attacks in different varieties where pimples, whiteheads and blackheads are of the mild form, cysts and pustules of the more severe form and the most severe form of acne is characterized by blocked oil glands forming inflamed skin and tissue.

Nodules in nodular acne usually form dense, dome like and irregular lesions. These nodules are usually red, swollen and affect not only surrounding skin but also the deeper layers.

At times, nodules form with cysts; where the condition is called nodulocystic acne. This form of acne is not only unsightly, but can also be rather painful to the sufferer. It is important to treat these nodules for if left untreated, it can lead to destruction of tissue and production of scars.

The reason isotretinoin is used to treat acne is because it controls the excessive sebum production, helps in reducing oil production in the skin and in addition to this, helps in prevention of clogged pores.

There are some side effects with isotretinoin; as it causes birth defects, they are not prescribed to pregnant women. It has other contraindications like mouth and skin dryness, itching, muscle aches, nosebleeds and photosensitivity.
