Environment, dirt and excessive oil production lead to clogged pores. There are oil glands on the skin called sebaceous glands that are beneficial to the skin when working properly.
These glands secrete oil that coats the hair shaft and protects it from getting dry and brittle. This oil also protects the hair and is important in creating a layer on the skin surface to protect the skin from excessive water loss.
The oil also keeps the skin soft and pliable while protecting it from harmful bacteria. It is too much of this oil that may clog your skin pores. Skin pores have to be unclogged and cleansed periodically to avoid inflammation of the skin pore.
Though you can use pore cleansers to do this, a simple facial steam at home is great for clearing pores and rejuvenating your face. These pore cleansers extract impurities from skin by opening the pores.
Essential oils added to the steam water not only provide fragrance, but also the nutrients of oils while penetrating the skin on exuding their healing properties.
This is why you have to choose essential oils depending on your skin type.
Mandarin or lavender essential oil is good for normal skin type while rose or chamomile essential oil is used for dry skin. Choosing the essential oil for oily skin is tricky as you need oil that does not add more oil to pores. This is why eucalyptus or lemon oil are best here.
Facial steams not only cleanse the skin but also open the pores to permit impurities to get extracted. However for soft, clean and healthy skin, it is better to start with a simple facial steam.
