Using Tetracycline for Treating Acne:
One of the treatment options given to acne sufferers is antibiotics as the antibiotic can fight the bacteria that cause pimples. Of the many available antibiotics, tetracycline is one of the most effective in lessening acne symptoms.
Tetracycline, and its derivatives doxycycline and minocycline are effective in reducing acne symptoms, but not in curing it. A high dose of tetracycline is prescribed to those with severe acne, and a mild dose for those with mild acne.
Tetracycline is taken as a capsule or in liquid form, orally. The usual dosage is 2-4 times a day, but not with food, especially dairy products. It has to be taken an hour after eating food when the stomach is empty with a full glass of water.
To get best results, it is important to strictly follow the doctor’s dose and take it continuously for a long time. Liquids have to be shaken well before use for even mixing of medicine.
However pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take tetracycline as it slows bone growth and leads to skeletal defects in the fetus. Children below 12 are prohibited from taking tetracycline too.
There are some side effects with tetracycline use like headaches, diarrhea, renal toxicity, vomiting, muscle pains, extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, enterocolitis, skin rashes, hemolytic anemia, eye problems and difficulty in breathing or swallowing.
