Where To Look In A Fight
The typical assumptions of where to look in a fight (whether UFC, kickboxing, street, or karate) are:
1. The top of the head
2. The eyes,
3. The chest,
4. The waist.
One of the most important places not to look is the eyes as someone can and will use their eyes as a feint to distract you. The waist is too low to retain peripheral vision of your opponent’s hands.
The best advice for focusing your vision during a fight or martial art competition is at your opponent’s chest. This retains your opponent’s full body in the field of vision while ignoring the deceitful eyes. Your eyes should be fixed on the upper part of the chest while always monitoring lower leg attacks.
An interesting argument of the Russian martial art “Systema” is to focus your attention above your opponents head. This is used primarily for multiply attackers as it sacrifices the perception of low leg attacks but enables a wider field of vision which can be used against a greater number of attacks.
1. If you are fighting a single attacker, focus your vision on their upper chest
2. If you are combating multiple attackers, raise your point of visual focus to their forehead or above their head to increase your field of periphery vision.
